The ancient tale evokes the origins of potable water. One day, in the aquatic palace of the Kingdom of Naga, a giant poisons the river water. A young heroine struggles against him and thus becomes "Queen Naga," the protectress of water.

Lakhaoon Niyeay is also known as modern Cambodian theater. It is the youngest of theatrical forms in Cambodia since it developed during the 1930's and 1940's during the period of French occupation.
