Kap Krabey Pheok Sra, Buffalo Sacrifice Dance, 2014

This folk dance originates from the Charay /Jarai and Tumpourn/Tempuan ethnic groups of Ratanakiri Province. This all-male dance is full of strength and vigor, depicting the act of hunting. Acompanied by numerous gong drums, it shows the traditional practice of butchering a buffalo and drinking its blood mixed with wine as an offering to the spirits in return for hunting sucess.

The piece was created by a team of researchers including Prof. Chheng Phon, Prof. Hang Soth, Prof. Phim Chheang, Prof. Kong Vuth, and Prof. Chrang Proeurng. It was performed from 1965 until 1975, and has been revived since 1979.
