Le beau-père qui choisit son gendre - Sbaek Touch
Small Shadow Theater - Sbaek Touch
Company Sinn Samy
Thursday 9 October, 6.30pm
This comic play shows us the strategies employed by a patriarch in order to choose the very best husband for his daughter. Two criteria must be respected, or the marriage will be annulled: the son-inlaw will be forbidden to shout or to hurl insults.
Originating in the Siem Reap region, this form of shadow theater features both tragedies and comedies, inspired by everyday life. The puppets are made of skin, and their arms and legs have joints. The performance is always preceded by a consecration ceremony accompanied by Pin Peat music, a ritual music belonging to the repertory of sacred music. Sbaek Touch is thus a meeting of the sacred and the profane, of daily activity and ritual.
